Driver fined for dangerous concrete spill on Accra highway; police warn operators on safety

The Madina District Magistrate Court has convicted Solomon Tawiah, driver of a concrete mixer truck, after he discharged a large quantity of concrete onto the Madina-Adenta Highway, creating a serious hazard for motorists and pedestrians. The incident has reignited concerns about safety standards among transport operators on Ghana's busy urban routes.

The incident took place on Saturday, September 5, 2026, approximately 100 metres from the Zongo Junction Traffic Light. A Mercedes-Benz concrete mixer truck belonging to Betonsa Ghana Limited, with registration number GE 4891-14, spilled its cargo directly onto the main carriageway before the driver fled the scene, leaving other road users to navigate the debris.

Swift police investigation and prosecution

The Madina Divisional Police Command's Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) acted quickly following reports of the incident. Officers traced the vehicle to Betonsa Ghana Limited's premises at Spintex and engaged the company's Transport Manager, who subsequently brought Tawiah to the police station on Tuesday, September 8.

Tawiah was charged with three offences under the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2519): placing construction materials and equipment on a road in a manner causing danger to road users, and obstructing an intersection or pedestrian crossing. He pleaded guilty to all charges when arraigned before the Madina District Magistrate Court.

The magistrate imposed a fine of 25 penalty units on each count, with sentences to run consecutively. Tawiah has already paid the fines in full.

The command commended members of the public whose information led to the swift identification and apprehension of the driver, emphasising that community reporting remains vital in improving road safety enforcement across the country.

Transport operators and drivers are urged to conduct pre-journey safety checks, secure loads properly, and report immediately if spillages occur. The police warning signals a harder line on traffic violations that endanger public safety, particularly those involving commercial vehicles.
