Climate stress pushing Upper East farmers into dangerous chemical spiral, EPA warns
Ghana's Environmental Protection Agency has raised alarm over a troubling trend in the Upper East Region, where climate change is driving farmers to apply increasingly dangerous levels of agrochemicals in a desperate bid to maintain crop yields amid environmental stress.
The EPA identified a critical cycle: as temperatures rise and soil moisture becomes scarce, the impact of fertilisers and herbicides diminishes significantly. Farmers, facing the threat of total crop failure, respond by applying more chemicals than recommended—a practice that offers only temporary relief while creating long-term environmental and health consequences.
The climate-agriculture crisis in the savanna
The Upper East Region, already vulnerable to irregular rainfall and heat stress, is experiencing intensified pressure on its agricultural base. Small-scale farmers who depend on rain-fed farming are caught between climatic uncertainty and the rising costs of agrochemical inputs. As soil degradation accelerates due to climate stress, the effectiveness of chemical interventions decreases further, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of overuse and environmental damage.
The region's soils, already fragile in the savanna ecosystem, are increasingly depleted of organic matter and nutrients. This depletion means chemicals applied today may have little effect tomorrow, pushing desperate farmers to increase dosage rather than adopt sustainable alternatives they cannot afford or access.

This trend threatens multiple critical sectors in Ghana's economy and public health. Agrochemical overuse contaminates groundwater—a primary source of drinking water for millions of Ghanaians, particularly in rural areas. The Upper East Region depends heavily on boreholes and shallow wells, making water pollution from agricultural runoff an acute public health risk.
Beyond contamination, soil degradation reduces the productive capacity of Ghana's farmland at a moment when the country faces pressure to increase food security. Loss of soil fertility forces migration from rural areas, accelerating urbanisation and straining cities already struggling with infrastructure deficits. Additionally, farmer exposure to excess agrochemicals increases rates of pesticide poisoning and chronic health conditions, burdening Ghana's already stretched healthcare system.
The EPA's warning also highlights a broader policy gap. While Ghana has committed internationally to climate action and sustainable agriculture through the Paris Agreement and various African Union frameworks, implementation on the ground remains weak. Farmers lack access to climate-smart alternatives—drought-resistant crop varieties, soil conservation techniques, organic inputs, and irrigation support—that could break the chemical dependency cycle.
What needs to happen next
Addressing this crisis requires coordinated action:
- Agricultural extension services must promote proven alternatives such as improved composting, mulching, crop rotation, and water harvesting to reduce chemical dependency.
- Government subsidies or grants for climate-resilient seeds and sustainable inputs could make alternatives economically viable for poor farmers.
- Water quality monitoring programmes should be expanded to track contamination in the Upper East and provide early warning systems.
- Farmer education on safe agrochemical handling and the long-term costs of overuse could shift behaviour, though this alone will not solve the underlying resource constraints.
The EPA's alert is timely, but without targeted investment in climate adaptation and agricultural transformation, the Upper East Region's farming communities will continue applying ever-larger quantities of chemicals—poisoning soil, water, and themselves in the process.
