Augusco Makes History: St Augustine's College Retains National Investment Quiz Crown
St Augustine's College has cemented its place in the annals of Ghana's educational competitions by becoming the first school to successfully defend the National Investment Quiz title, triumphing in a closely contested grand finale that kept spectators on edge throughout the evening.
The Cape Coast-based institution, popularly known as Augusco, overcame fierce opposition from Mfantsipim School, Prempeh College and Corpus Christi Senior High School to claim the 2026 trophy, a feat that underscores both their financial knowledge and competitive consistency.
A Contest That Went the Distance
The competition demonstrated remarkable parity among Ghana's top academic institutions. Mfantsipim stormed ahead in round one with 12 points, leaving Augusco and Prempeh tied on 10 and Corpus Christi on 5. However, Augusco quickly found their rhythm, moving to 19 points by round two—just a single point ahead of Mfantsipim's 18.
Round three intensified the drama. Corpus Christi and Prempeh both scored 13 out of 15, whilst Augusco and Mfantsipim matched each other perfectly with 14 out of 15, keeping all four schools in realistic contention for the trophy as the final round approached.
The decisive fourth round proved to be where Augusco's experience showed. They pulled clear with 40 points, whilst Mfantsipim remained competitive at 36, followed by Prempeh on 33 and Corpus Christi on 23. The riddle round provided some of the evening's most dramatic moments, with all four schools initially failing on the opening riddle before Corpus Christi recovered with a correct answer on the second question.
Why It Matters for Ghana
The National Investment Quiz represents a significant stride in Ghana's effort to build financial literacy among young people at a critical stage of their education. By making topics such as stocks, bonds and investment fundamentals accessible and engaging to secondary school students, the competition addresses a genuine gap in financial education across the country.
Augusco's back-to-back victory signals not only their institutional strength but also validates the growing sophistication of financial knowledge among Ghana's top academic performers. This matters because as these students progress into tertiary education and the workforce, they carry with them a foundational understanding of investment principles that could shape personal financial decisions and, collectively, influence broader economic participation among young Ghanaians.
The quality of competition witnessed this year, according to organisers, reflects the quiz's expansion and deepening impact since its inception. What began as a niche competition has evolved into a platform where Ghana's brightest students confidently debate complex financial concepts—a development with potential long-term implications for the country's financial sector and investor base.
Looking Ahead
All four finalist schools demonstrated spirited performances worthy of recognition. Whilst Augusco's consistency proved decisive, the narrow margins separating the schools highlight the rising standard of financial acumen among Ghana's secondary school population. Beyond the trophy, participants leave with practical knowledge of investment markets and principles that extend far beyond the competitive stage.
