Apply Now: Creative Producer Indaba 2026 Opens Doors for Ghanaian Filmmakers
Ghanaian filmmakers and producers now have a significant opportunity to advance their careers through the Creative Producer Indaba, a comprehensive professional development programme launching its 6th edition in November 2026. The initiative, presented by South Africa-based pan-African non-profit Realness Institute in partnership with European and international funding bodies, offers African producers—including those from Ghana—an intensive pathway to build business acumen, creative skills, and sustainable careers in film.
The programme welcomes a cohort of just 10 producers from across Africa for a six-month journey combining online and in-person workshops. Participants will engage with industry veterans, develop strategic business plans, and refine their craft through collaborative sessions addressing story development, film financing, festival positioning, marketing fundamentals, and leadership strategies. The structured curriculum balances creative ambition with commercial viability—a critical gap many African filmmakers face when scaling their operations.
Programme Structure and Timeline
The Creative Producer Indaba unfolds across three workshop phases. The initial online workshop launches on 24 November 2026, providing remote access for producers unable to travel immediately. This is followed by an in-person and online hybrid session on 7 February 2027, and a final in-person workshop on 3 April 2027 hosted across South Africa and Réunion Island. This flexible structure accommodates producers managing ongoing projects while pursuing professional development.
Mentorship forms the heart of the programme, with leadership provided by Emmy Award-nominated producer Mehret Mandefro and European Film Academy Award-winning producer Diana Elbaum. Their combined expertise bridges African, European, and international film markets—invaluable for Ghanaian producers seeking to position work globally.
Eligibility and Application Details
Ghanaian producers must meet specific production credits to apply: at least one feature-length film (fiction or documentary), a series, or a minimum of four short films in lead or co-producer capacity. Executive, associate, and line producer credits alone do not qualify. The programme also welcomes film professionals from related disciplines—distributors, sales agents, broadcasters, and development officers—with four years' minimum experience in their field.
Applications close on 3 November 2026 at 16h00 SAST. Aspiring participants should visit the Realness Institute website to submit their materials. Additionally, funding partners have reserved one fully-sponsored spot each for applicants from Brazil, Switzerland, and Austria, though Ghanaian producers may apply for the general competitive positions.
Why This Matters for Ghana's Film Industry
Ghana's creative sector has produced award-winning filmmakers and growing international recognition, yet many producers struggle with the business fundamentals required to scale sustainably. The Creative Producer Indaba addresses this directly: participants leave with structured financing strategies, networking across African and European markets, and leadership frameworks applicable to future projects. For Ghana, this means producers returning home equipped to mentor emerging talent, attract international co-production deals, and strengthen the country's position in continental film infrastructure.
The programme's emphasis on building financially sustainable businesses is particularly relevant for Ghanaian filmmakers navigating limited domestic funding and competition for regional film commission support. Graduates gain credibility with international funders and festival gatekeepers—essential for breaking through crowded markets.
Interested Ghanaian producers should review eligibility requirements carefully and submit applications well before the November deadline. For further questions, contact submissions@realness.institute.
