AngloGold Ashanti Invests Over GH¢6.7 Million in Healthcare Infrastructure for Obuasi Communities
AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has completed construction of two modern health centres designed to expand healthcare access across its host communities in the Ashanti Region. The Apitikooko Health Centre and Staff Quarters, valued at GH¢4,077,496.70, and the Dokyiwa/Binsere Health Centre, which cost GH¢2,712,264.20, were commissioned following completion of the major infrastructure projects.
The dual investment represents part of the mining company's broader 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan aimed at transforming host communities and improving quality of life. Both facilities are expected to significantly enhance access to quality primary healthcare services, with particular emphasis on maternal and child health, outpatient care, and emergency medical services for residents across their catchment areas.
Strategic Healthcare Infrastructure Push
The Apitikooko centre stands out for its inclusion of staff quarters, a deliberate move intended to attract and retain qualified healthcare professionals in the area. This approach addresses a critical challenge in rural healthcare delivery—the difficulty of recruiting and maintaining skilled medical personnel in communities away from urban centres. By providing comfortable accommodation, the company aims to ensure consistent, uninterrupted delivery of quality healthcare services.
AngloGold Ashanti Managing Director Ing. Samuel Boakye Pobee described the facilities as strategic investments in building healthier and more resilient communities, noting they reflect the company's broader purpose of mining to empower people and advance societies. The Apitikooko and Dokyiwa/Binsere centres form part of a larger health infrastructure programme that also includes rehabilitation of the Anyinam Health Centre and ongoing construction of the Akaporiso Model Health Centre. The company additionally operates a quarterly mini clinic outreach programme across the region.
Local Economic Development and Partnership
Beyond healthcare provision, the projects underscore AngloGold Ashanti's commitment to local content and enterprise development. Kenzad Construction Limited and Crisspan Construction, both local contractors, were engaged to construct the respective facilities. This approach has dual benefits: it delivers critical social infrastructure whilst strengthening local technical capacity and creating economic opportunities within the communities themselves.
Support from government and regional authorities reinforces the importance of these developments. Dr. Fred Adomako Boateng, Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, described the facilities as a major boost to primary healthcare delivery, whilst a representative of the Ashanti Regional Ministry commended AngloGold Ashanti for complementing government efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure. The official also highlighted the value of public-private partnerships in advancing community development.
Why It Matters for Ghana
Mining communities often face unique development challenges, particularly in remote areas where government resources are stretched. AngloGold Ashanti's investment addresses a critical gap in healthcare infrastructure in Obuasi and surrounding areas. For Ghana, such corporate-led healthcare initiatives complement government health services and help achieve national health targets, particularly in maternal and child health—key indicators tracked by the Ghana Health Service and international development partners.
The commissioning also reinforces the broader conversation around corporate social responsibility and shared value in Ghana's mining sector. As the country balances economic benefits from mining with community welfare, projects like these demonstrate how mining companies can invest meaningfully in lasting social infrastructure. The emphasis on local contractors ensures that benefits of these investments extend beyond healthcare provision to local economic development and skills enhancement.
Community leaders, including the Dompoasehene, have expressed deep appreciation for what they view as a transformational investment with long-term socio-economic implications for the area. The challenge ahead will be ensuring the facilities are adequately staffed, efficiently managed, and properly maintained to deliver the intended healthcare benefits for years to come.
