Access Bank Ghana Expands Rewards Programme With Points Africa Partnership
Access Bank Ghana has announced a strategic partnership with Points Africa, a mobile-first rewards platform, to significantly expand its Rewards by Access customer loyalty programme. The collaboration strengthens the bank's offering by integrating Points Africa's merchant ecosystem, giving cardholders access to over 65 participating retail, dining, wellness and entertainment venues across Ghana where they can earn and redeem loyalty points.
The expansion represents a shift towards making reward schemes more practical and accessible to everyday banking customers. Rather than limiting redemptions to traditional partner networks, Access Bank customers can now leverage their accumulated points at a broader range of lifestyle destinations, including restaurants, retail outlets, wellness centres and entertainment venues nationwide.
How the Enhanced Programme Works
Existing Rewards by Access members will automatically benefit from the expanded network without needing to take additional steps. Customers continue earning loyalty points when they use their Access Bank cards for transactions, but now have significantly more options for redeeming those points across the Points Africa platform.
The bank has confirmed that eligible cardholders will be able to seamlessly access the wider merchant network, with details on programme eligibility, participating merchants and earning mechanisms to be communicated directly to customers. Access Bank emphasised that the integration requires no changes to how customers currently use their cards or manage their rewards.
Why This Matters for Ghana's Banking Sector
This partnership reflects a growing trend among Ghanaian banks to enhance customer retention through innovative loyalty schemes that go beyond traditional banking benefits. By partnering with Points Africa's merchant ecosystem rather than building in-house solutions, Access Bank reduces operational complexity whilst expanding reach faster than developing proprietary networks.
For Ghanaian consumers, the expanded scheme addresses a common frustration with loyalty programmes: limited redemption options. With over 65 merchants on the Points Africa platform covering diverse categories, cardholders have genuine practical value in their accumulated points, making the scheme more attractive for frequent card usage.
The partnership also signals Access Bank's commitment to digital-first customer experiences, aligning with broader industry moves towards mobile banking and integrated financial services. Points Africa's mobile-first approach makes rewards management easier for customers on the go, particularly important in Ghana where mobile money adoption remains high.
Eugene Ocansey, Executive Director of Retail and SME Banking at Access Bank Ghana, noted that the initiative reflects the bank's focus on customer-centric solutions that deliver tangible value in everyday transactions. He indicated the bank would continue exploring innovative partnerships to improve customer benefits.
Adam Meghji, Chief Commercial Officer at Points Africa, emphasised that the partnership makes rewards more accessible by connecting them to everyday spending patterns. Rather than requiring customers to seek out specific merchants or redemption channels, the expanded network brings reward redemption closer to regular purchase behaviours.
Strategic Positioning in Competitive Market
The move positions Access Bank competitively within Ghana's retail banking sector, where customer acquisition and retention increasingly depend on value-added services beyond basic financial products. Loyalty programmes have become standard differentiators, and expanding merchant partnerships creates genuine competitive advantage.
For Access Bank, the partnership also leverages Points Africa's existing infrastructure and merchant relationships, allowing faster expansion than organic growth would permit. This approach mirrors successful strategies in other African markets where banks partner with fintech platforms to enhance service offerings without significant capital investment in building proprietary solutions.
