Wontumi Defends Ashanti NPP Executive Swearing-In, Questions National Leadership's Authority

The Campaign Secretariat of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has mounted a robust defence of his decision to administer oaths to newly elected NPP constituency executives, arguing the action complied fully with party election guidelines rather than breaching national leadership directives.

The dispute centres on Wontumi's swearing-in of constituency executives following elections in the Ashanti Region, a move that appears to have triggered tension with the party's National Steering Committee, which reportedly annulled some of the election results. In a statement released Thursday, Wontumi's team clarified the procedural basis for the ceremony and questioned whether the national body had constitutional authority to invalidate completed elections.

The Defence and Process

According to the Secretariat, the constituency elections were conducted under the NPP's officially approved election framework, with the Electoral Commission supervising in collaboration with local Constituency Elections Committees. Importantly, the Secretariat emphasised that representatives appointed by both National and Regional Steering Committees were involved in the process, meaning it was not a unilateral regional action.

The Secretariat stated that when Wontumi administered the oath of office, no official communication had been received indicating the election results had been annulled. It characterised the swearing-in as a routine administrative step following the proper completion of an electoral exercise, not an attempt to undermine national authority.

Constitutional Questions Raised

Rather than backing down, the Secretariat has turned up pressure by raising pointed constitutional queries. It asked under which provision of the NPP constitution or 2026 Election Regulations the National Steering Committee derived authority to annul completed elections. The statement further demanded clarity on what evidence supported the annulment decision, whether affected officers and candidates were afforded a hearing, and whether court injunctions influenced the move.

The Secretariat framed these questions as legitimate demands for transparency and accountability rather than acts of insubordination, asserting that decisions of such magnitude should rest on clear constitutional authority, established facts and procedural fairness rather than discretionary action.
