Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on European Nations Over Digital Tax on US Tech Firms

United States President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to European nations, threatening to slap a 100% tariff on all goods they export to America if they proceed with plans to introduce digital services taxes targeting US technology companies. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, stating that several European countries were either close to or actively considering such levies.

In his post, Trump declared that the punitive tariffs would take effect immediately and would override any existing bilateral trade agreements between the US and the affected nations. "Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America," he wrote.

The threat carries significant implications for several major economies. France, Italy, and Spain already impose a 3% digital services tax on large companies operating within their borders. The United Kingdom, which has maintained a 2% Digital Services Tax since 2020, also faces potential exposure, though the precise impact on London remains unclear given the existing nature of its levy. Britain's tax applies to major platforms such as Google, Apple, Meta, and Amazon, and raised over £800 million in the 2024–25 financial year.

The timing of Trump's warning is notable, coming just days after the United States and the European Union concluded a new trade agreement. Cyprus's Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michael Damianos, responded by noting that the EU retains the capacity to act swiftly and proportionately should the terms of any deal be undermined.

Trump's aggressive tariff posture is not new. Earlier in 2025, the US Supreme Court struck down his attempt to impose a blanket 10% global tariff, though Washington subsequently announced fresh tariffs of between 10% and 12.5% on dozens of countries over forced labour concerns. The escalating trade tensions are being closely monitored across Africa and in Ghana, where exports to both the US and Europe — including cocoa, gold, and manufactured goods — could be indirectly affected by any broader breakdown in transatlantic trade relations.
