Three Tamale Children Found Dead in Vehicle Boot; Immigration Officer Arrested as Police Launch Major Investigation

Police in the Northern Region are intensifying investigations into the deaths of three young children whose bodies were found in the boot of a vehicle at Koblimahagu Zoo in Tamale early Monday morning. The discovery has sparked a major police operation involving the deployment of specialist investigators from the capital, following the arrest of the vehicle's owner, a member of the Ghana Immigration Service.

The three children—identified as Dauda Abdul Aziz (3), Saani Alsharaf (5), and Dauda Fadilan (7)—left their homes on Sunday, 4 October 2026 to attend Islamic classes at approximately 8am but never returned. Community search efforts proved unsuccessful until residents discovered their bodies inside the locked boot of a black Hyundai Tucson (registration AS 1770-14) on Monday at around 5am.

Investigation Response and Vehicle Examination

The Inspector-General of Police has dispatched a dedicated investigative unit to Tamale comprising homicide specialists, crime scene experts and intelligence officers to support the Northern Regional Police Command. This move signals the seriousness with which police are treating the case and suggests investigators anticipate complex circumstances requiring high-level expertise.

The vehicle owner has been transported to Accra to assist with investigations. Police disclosed that he told investigators the Hyundai Tucson had been stuck in mud on the road leading to the zoo for approximately five days. Initial inspection revealed the driver's door and rear passenger door behind the driver's seat were open, whilst other doors including the boot were locked. The vehicle has been secured for detailed forensic examination to help establish exactly what occurred.

Autopsy and Family Concerns

Police have declined requests from the children's families to release the bodies for burial according to Islamic customs, stating that autopsy examinations are essential to support the investigation. Authorities have pledged to cover all financial costs associated with the post-mortem procedures. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed publicly.

Why It Matters for Ghana

This tragedy highlights critical child safety concerns within communities and raises questions about vehicle security and public awareness. The involvement of a Ghana Immigration Service employee adds another dimension, suggesting the investigation may uncover systemic issues beyond a single incident. The decision to deploy specialist homicide teams reflects institutional recognition that such cases demand rigorous, transparent investigation to maintain public confidence in the justice system and to establish facts that will help prevent similar tragedies.

For Tamale and broader Northern Region communities, the case underscores the vulnerability of young children and the importance of coordinated child protection mechanisms. The police's commitment to thorough autopsy and forensic work, despite family wishes for swift burial, demonstrates the tension between cultural practices and investigative necessity—a balance that will be closely watched by Ghanaian civil society.

Investigations remain ongoing as police work to establish the full circumstances of the children's deaths.
