Three fires strike Accra in single day; firefighters prevent major spread across Greater Accra

The Ghana National Fire Service responded to three separate fire incidents across Greater Accra on Sunday, August 9, with firefighters managing to prevent widespread damage and casualties across all three locations. An abandoned container truck at Ogbojo was completely destroyed, whilst two other fires at the Circle Roundabout and Teshie Bush Road were swiftly contained.

At Ogbojo, the most severe of the three incidents saw an abandoned trailer engulfed entirely in flames, destroying both the vehicle and its contents. The swift response from firefighters proved critical when two buses parked near the burning trailer faced the risk of being caught in the blaze. Crews successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the buses before it could intensify. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the Ogbojo fire.

Other incidents across the capital

A second fire broke out at the Circle Roundabout involving refuse, though firefighters extinguished it before it could spread to surrounding properties. The incident resulted in no damage or casualties reported in the area.

The third incident unfolded along the Teshie Bush Road, where a vehicle caught fire. Firefighters from the Trade Fair Fire Station attended the scene and brought the blaze under control. Whilst the fire destroyed the vehicle's bonnet, engine compartment and bumper, no injuries were recorded.

Fire safety concerns in Accra

The three incidents underscore ongoing fire hazards across Greater Accra, with abandoned vehicles and improperly stored refuse presenting particular risks. The causes of all three fires remain under investigation by relevant authorities. The rapid deployment and effective coordination by Ghana's fire service prevented what could have escalated into more serious situations, particularly at Ogbojo where proximity to other vehicles posed additional risk.

Sunday's incidents highlight the importance of public vigilance regarding fire safety, especially during periods of high heat and in areas where abandoned vehicles and waste accumulate. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious fire hazards and abandoned property to local authorities or the Ghana National Fire Service.
