Switzerland Stuns Colombia on Penalties; Faces Argentina in World Cup Quarter-Finals
Switzerland has advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Colombia at BC Place in Vancouver. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel proved decisive, saving a spot-kick from Colombia's Cucho Hernandez to secure a 4-3 shootout win following a goalless draw after extra time.
The Swiss will now face defending champions Argentina on Sunday, 12 July at Kansas City Stadium. This marks Switzerland's first appearance in the last eight of the tournament since 1954, representing a historic milestone for the nation. Murat Yakin's side has now won back-to-back knockout matches, having also defeated Algeria in the previous round.
Colombia's exit came despite an impressive defensive showing throughout the tournament, having conceded just one goal in their group stage and knockout run. However, their attacking play proved insufficient against a resolute Swiss defence. Colombia's Jhon Lucumi struck the crossbar early on, and substitute Jaminton Campaz had a gilt-edged chance late in extra time but curled his shot over the bar—a miss that proved costly.
The South American side's struggles were compounded by the absence of a consistent striker. Whilst Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez, Colombia's record cap holder with 131 appearances, created opportunities, the team managed only five goals from 94 shots across the tournament.
Switzerland's progress comes despite their own injury concerns. Breakthrough star Johan Manzambi, who had scored three goals and created two assists in the tournament, missed the match through injury. Substitute Ruben Vargas, however, scored the decisive penalty after coming on late in the game.
