Student Granted Bail in GH¢1.5m Theft Case Against Bishop Obinim
A 23-year-old university student has been released on bail by an Adenta Circuit Court after being accused of conspiring to steal GH¢1.5 million from Bishop Daniel Obinim, the founder of the International Godsway Church. The accused, Ohemaa Serwaa Abigail Owusu Ansah, faces charges of conspiracy to commit theft but has not yet entered a plea to the allegations.
The court's bail conditions require two sureties, with one mandated to provide landed property as security. She is scheduled to reappear in court on October 29, 2026, as investigations into the matter continue.
Details of the Alleged Theft
According to the prosecution's case presented by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, Bishop Obinim reported that the accused visited him at his Lakeside residence on October 13, 2026. The two were acquainted through their personal relationship. During the visit, whilst engaged in conversation within his private room, the Bishop left to attend church duties, leaving the accused unsupervised in the house.
The following morning at approximately 07:00 hours, Bishop Obinim discovered that his safe had been forcibly opened and GH¢1.5 million had gone missing. When questioned about the theft, the accused allegedly confessed to involvement. She reportedly told the complainant that she had arranged for her father's worker, identified as Owusu, to send two unidentified young men to the residence. The accused allegedly guided these men to the Bishop's room and showed them the location of the safe, which they subsequently broke open and emptied of the cash before leaving.
Investigation and Arrest
Police arrested the accused on October 16, 2026, at approximately 14:00 hours and transferred her to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters for questioning. During her caution statement at the CID, she reportedly acknowledged inviting the two men to Bishop Obinim's house specifically to break into and rob the safe.
The prosecution has indicated that investigations remain ongoing, suggesting that efforts to locate and apprehend the two unidentified men allegedly involved in the actual burglary are continuing.
Why It Matters for Ghana
This case highlights the security vulnerabilities that high-profile figures, particularly wealthy clerics, face in Ghana. Bishop Obinim is a well-known religious leader whose church has a significant following, making him a target for theft. The incident raises questions about personal security practices among prominent individuals and trust placed in acquaintances with access to homes and valuables.
The amount involved—GH¢1.5 million—represents a substantial theft that underscores ongoing concerns about organised crime networks in Greater Accra. The apparent coordination between multiple individuals to commit the crime suggests a potentially sophisticated criminal operation rather than a spontaneous act, which carries implications for law enforcement priorities in tackling organised theft rings.
Additionally, this case reflects broader concerns about insider involvement in security breaches. The accused's known relationship with the Bishop demonstrates how personal connections can be exploited by criminals, a pattern authorities must contend with when investigating high-value thefts in the country.
