South Africa Eliminated as Canada Reach World Cup Last 16 in Dramatic Fashion
South Africa's 2025 FIFA World Cup campaign has come to an end after a heartbreaking defeat to co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles, with Stephen Eustaquio firing home a stunning late winner in the second minute of stoppage time to send Jesse Marsch's side into the last 16.
It was a moment of individual brilliance that settled an otherwise uninspiring contest. Eustaquio collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and drove a precise low strike into the net, sparing Canada from the prospect of extra time and delivering a historic result — their first-ever progression to the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup.
Bafana Bafana, who had finished second in Group A, struggled to impose themselves on the match and managed only one shot on target throughout the 90 minutes. A crucial clearance off the line by Aubrey Modiba had kept South Africa level earlier, but they were unable to find a winner of their own and now head home from the tournament.
Canada's evening was further boosted by the return of Bayern Munich fullback Alphonso Davies, who had been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in May. His introduction injected pace and energy into the Canadian attack, though it was ultimately Eustaquio who took centre stage.
Speaking to his players at full time, an emotional Marsch declared: "You are Canadian heroes. Canadian heroes for the future children of this country who play this sport." Canada had previously lost all six of their World Cup matches before this tournament, making this run all the more remarkable.
Canada will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands in Houston on Saturday, 4 July, in what promises to be a stern test. Both sides rank among the top ten in the FIFA World Rankings — Morocco at seventh and the Netherlands at eighth — but Canada will take enormous confidence from a campaign that has already exceeded all expectations.
