Queiroz: Black Stars Must Channel Croatia Loss Into Fuel For Colombia Clash
Carlos Queiroz has called on the Black Stars to treat their 2-1 group stage defeat to Croatia as a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block, saying the side must now channel that experience into their upcoming Round of 32 encounter against Colombia at the FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after Saturday's Group L fixture at Lincoln Financial Field, the veteran coach acknowledged that Ghana still have much to improve upon, but stressed that qualifying for the knockout stage was itself a significant achievement — one the squad must now build on.
Croatia claimed the victory through strikes from Petar Sucic and Nikola Vlasic, with Derrick Luckassen pulling one back for Ghana. Despite the loss, the Black Stars advanced to the last 32 after finishing third in the group on four points.
"As I always say, we either win or we learn. Today we learned," Queiroz told reporters after the match. He added that the priority now is to apply those lessons and arrive better prepared for what lies ahead, noting that knockout football carries an entirely different level of intensity where every decision is final.
The Portuguese coach, who acknowledged it was only his fourth match in charge of the national side, said the Croatia game gave him valuable insight into his squad's strengths and weaknesses. He pointed specifically to a tactical shift to a 4-4-2 formation in the second half as part of an ongoing process of identifying the best setup for the team.
Queiroz likened reaching the Round of 32 to receiving a credit card — teams must now prove they deserve to stay in the competition. Ghana's focus turns entirely to Colombia as they bid to secure a place in the Round of 16 and keep their World Cup dream alive.
