Police dismantle Buipe cattle market robbery gang; three suspects dead in shootout

The Savannah Regional Police Command has successfully broken up an armed robbery syndicate responsible for stealing GH¢430,000 from mobile money vendors at Buipe Cattle Market on 29 June 2026. The operation, which involved multiple police units and resulted in the deaths of three suspects during a confrontation, marks a significant crackdown on organised crime in the region.

The initial attack on the two mobile money vendors was carried out by four armed men wielding two pump-action guns, one single-barrel gun and an AK-47 assault rifle. After firing indiscriminately, the gang escaped with the substantial sum. The brazen nature of the daylight robbery at a busy market prompted the Inspector-General of Police to deploy specialised personnel from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit to assist regional investigators.

Swift arrests and police operation

On 23 July 2026, sustained surveillance by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and Police Intelligence Directorate led to the arrest of suspect Yacouba Oumar, 28, at Soronuase in the Bono East Region. During interrogation, Oumar confessed to participating in the robbery and identified his three accomplices: Yakubu Seidu (alias Baba), Abdulai Aziz Yahaya (alias Addo) and Abduli Buipe (alias Addo).

Critically, Oumar also revealed that the robbery was not a spontaneous crime but a calculated operation contracted by cattle trader Alhaji Yacouba, known by several aliases including Masaji, Muimen and Yakubu. This disclosure shifted the investigation's focus to uncovering the network behind the crime, suggesting an orchestrated scheme to target traders at the market.

Following these leads, police pursued investigations across multiple locations including Atebubuand Agogo, tracking the remaining gang members and weapons. An armed confrontation ensued, resulting in the deaths of suspects Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu. The bodies have been taken to a morgue for preservation and autopsy. Police recovered one pump-action gun with five live cartridges and a single-barrel gun believed to have been used in the original robbery.

Why it matters for Ghana

This case highlights the persistent challenge of armed robbery targeting traders and vendors across Ghana, particularly in rural and semi-urban markets where security infrastructure may be limited. The Buipe cattle market, a significant commercial hub in the Savannah Region, serves as a vital economic space for traders. Incidents like this robbery undermine business confidence and trader safety in such markets, affecting livelihoods and economic activity in the region.

The revelation that the robbery was allegedly contracted by someone within the market community—a cattle trader—is particularly concerning as it suggests collusion between criminals and insiders. This pattern, if confirmed, points to the need for enhanced vetting of market operations and stronger internal security measures within trading communities.

The police operation demonstrates improved inter-agency coordination, with the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, Intelligence Directorate and divisional commands working together to pursue suspects across regional boundaries. However, the fact that one primary suspect, Alhaji Yacouba, remains at large underscores that the investigation is ongoing.

What's next

Suspect Yacouba Oumar is in police custody assisting investigations. Authorities continue efforts to apprehend Alhaji Yacouba and others connected to the robbery. The recovery of weapons and the ongoing inquiry suggest police are building a comprehensive case to address both the perpetrators and the network enabling such crimes in market environments across the region.
