NPP losing talented members over shrinking debate space, says Crabbe in party leadership bid

The New Patriotic Party faces an internal credibility challenge as prominent figures warn that the party's culture has shifted toward intolerance and closed debate, causing talented members to defect to the opposition National Democratic Congress. Sammy Crabbe, who is running for NPP National Chairman, raised these concerns on Channel One TV this week, painting a picture of a party struggling to retain its intellectual capital.

Declining openness eroding party strength

Crabbe described a marked change in how the NPP operates internally compared to its past. He recalled that the party previously fostered an environment where members could engage freely, think independently, and challenge ideas without fear of marginalisation. "Within the NPP there was kind of freedom. There was a latitude," he said, contrasting this with the current climate where such latitude has diminished.

The NPP chairman aspirant identified specific institutional decisions that have compounded the problem. He pointed to how the party has handled its constitution as symptomatic of broader cultural shifts. "The way we even attacked our constitution in itself made good people move away, be scared to really engage and drive it," Crabbe explained, suggesting that constitutional disputes have spooked party members and discouraged participation.

Crabbe acknowledged that the NPP still possesses members with substantial expertise and knowledge. However, he questioned how effectively the party is mobilising this intellectual capacity. "They are good people; I can see knowledge. I can feel it," he said. "But how do you organise this knowledge? How do you put it out objectively?" This framing suggests that the problem is not a shortage of talent, but rather organisational dysfunction and an atmosphere that prevents that talent from being deployed productively.

The defection drain and competitive disadvantage

According to Crabbe, the erosion of internal debate space has direct consequences for party competitiveness. Some former NPP members who have moved to the NDC have become prominent figures within the opposition, he noted. "So people move from our party, and they move on to the NDC. And then they are the star performers," Crabbe said, pointing to a pattern where the NPP is effectively transferring experienced talent to its main political rival.

The loss of these individuals represents more than simple attrition—it is a transfer of institutional knowledge and political experience to the opposition at a critical time for Ghana's politics. When capable operatives leave one party for another, they carry with them not just their skills but also their understanding of the departing party's strategies, networks, and vulnerabilities.

Why it matters for Ghana

Ghana's two-party system depends on robust internal debate within parties to generate ideas, vet policies, and hold leadership accountable. When major parties become intolerant of dissent, the entire political ecosystem suffers. Citizens lose access to diverse policy perspectives from within parties, and party institutions become brittle, resistant to adaptation, and vulnerable to crisis.

Crabbe's warning also arrives at a significant moment. As the NPP prepares for internal elections and faces electoral cycles, party cohesion and intellectual vigour matter enormously. A party that cannot retain talented members or create space for constructive disagreement risks being outmanoeuvred by rivals who do. Ghanaians have a stake in political parties that function effectively, attract talent, and operate democratically—not as political machines that suppress dissent.

The timing of Crabbe's comments—while seeking the national chairmanship—also signals that reform of party culture may become a battleground issue within NPP leadership contests. How the party responds to these critiques could shape its direction and electoral prospects in coming years.
