NDC bolsters communications team with Julius Kwame Anthony appointment

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has moved to strengthen its communications infrastructure by appointing Julius Kwame Anthony as Deputy Communications Director, a decision approved by the party's Functional Executive Committee on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

In an announcement signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party stated that the appointment takes immediate effect and forms part of its broader strategy to enhance how it engages with the Ghanaian public on its policies, programmes and achievements.

Strengthening party communications

The NDC has emphasised that Anthony's appointment will bolster the party's ability to communicate effectively at a critical time for Ghana's political landscape. According to the party's statement, Anthony brings valuable understanding of strategic communication and will collaborate with the Communications Directorate and other internal party structures to advance the NDC's messaging objectives.

The appointment comes as the party operates under President John Dramani Mahama's administration, and the NDC has signalled that Anthony's role will be particularly focused on promoting what it terms the "Reset Agenda"—the government's policy framework for the current administration.

General Secretary Kwetey has also designated Anthony, alongside Godwin Ako Gunn and Kakra Essamuah, as official contact persons for media organisations and other stakeholders seeking to engage with the NDC on communications matters.

What this means for Ghana's political discourse

The appointment reflects an ongoing evolution in how Ghana's major political parties structure their communications operations. As the country moves deeper into the current electoral cycle and policy implementation phase, parties are investing in strengthened media and public relations capacity to shape narratives around governance and party performance.

For Ghanaians, enhanced party communications mean potentially more structured, regular information flow from political organisations about their activities and policy positions. However, this also underscores the competitive nature of political messaging in Ghana, where parties vie for public attention and support through strategic communication.

The NDC's move to formalise additional communications leadership suggests the party is prioritising its ability to respond quickly to political developments and counter opposition narratives. This is particularly relevant given Ghana's polarised political environment, where messaging and public perception often play decisive roles in electoral outcomes and policy acceptance.

Organisational consolidation under the current government

Anthony's appointment sits within a broader pattern of NDC organisational decisions since the party assumed office in January 2025 following the 2024 elections. The party has made several strategic staffing decisions aimed at consolidating its governance messaging and party administration.

The designation of three official NDC contact persons for media engagement also signals an attempt to professionalise and centralise the party's media interface, ensuring consistent messaging and reducing ad hoc or contradictory statements that could undermine party coherence.

Kwetey's congratulations to Anthony and expression of confidence in his new role indicate the party views this appointment as significant to its operational success in the coming period.
