MTN Ghana Opens Season 8 of Heroes of Change — GHS400,000 Grand Prize for Community Changemakers
MTN Ghana Foundation is calling on Ghanaians to nominate outstanding community leaders and changemakers for the eighth edition of its prestigious Heroes of Change awards programme. The initiative, which celebrates individuals making tangible, lasting improvements in their communities, opens nominations until 19 October 2026 through the MTN website and service centres nationwide.
The awards recognise exceptional work across three focus areas: Education, Health and Economic Empowerment. An overall winner will receive GHS400,000, whilst category winners in each discipline will each pocket GHS200,000 to scale their initiatives. Additionally, nominators of the 10 finalists stand to win special recognition prizes, with additional awards for outstanding contributions in Sustainability and Digital Innovation.
How to Nominate and What's at Stake
Interested parties can submit nominations via two channels: the MTN Ghana website (www.mtn.com.gh) or by visiting any MTN Service Centre. The programme seeks individuals whose work demonstrates measurable, sustainable community impact—people whose service is driven by commitment, compassion and a genuine desire to improve lives rather than personal gain.
Adwoa Wiafe, MTN Ghana's Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, emphasised the programme's core mission. "Heroes of Change celebrates people who serve their communities without seeking recognition or reward," she said, adding that Season 8 aims to identify and support more changemakers whose work inspires broader social transformation.
Why It Matters for Ghana
Heroes of Change has become a significant platform for recognising grassroots social impact in Ghana. Over its seven previous seasons, the award has provided crucial visibility, validation and financial resources to individuals tackling pressing national challenges in education access, healthcare delivery and livelihood creation—sectors where informal leaders and community organisations often work with minimal resources or public acknowledgement.
This year's edition carries added significance as MTN Ghana marks its 30th anniversary, reinforcing the company's "Force for Good" philosophy. The awards align with broader corporate responsibility trends in Ghana, where major companies increasingly leverage their platforms to amplify non-governmental social contributions and model alternative funding mechanisms for civil society work.
For many Ghanaians, the financial prizes represent meaningful capital to expand proven programmes—whether that means scaling educational initiatives to reach more students, extending healthcare services to underserved populations, or creating employment pathways in economically marginalised communities. The public visibility also attracts further partnerships and donor interest, multiplying the initial award's impact.
Strengthening Community-Driven Development
Ghana's development challenges—particularly gaps in quality education, healthcare access in rural areas, and youth unemployment—cannot be solved by government or corporations alone. Grassroots changemakers filling these gaps deserve recognition and support. Heroes of Change functions both as incentive and as evidence of what ordinary citizens can achieve with determination and community trust.
For those considering nominations, the deadline of 19 October 2026 provides a clear window. Nominating a community hero is straightforward, and the potential impact is substantial—both for the recognised individual and for the communities they serve.
