Lawyer Calls for NDC Distance from Obuasi School Head Facing Abuse Allegations

International corporate lawyer Victoria Bright has made a stark call for the National Democratic Congress to publicly distance itself from the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, who is reportedly pursuing political office while facing serious sexual abuse allegations against him.

Speaking on Saturday, Ms Bright argued that allowing individuals under investigation for such grave misconduct to gain political influence sends the wrong message and undermines efforts to protect vulnerable students in Ghana's education system.

The Controversy and Political Questions

The timing of the headmaster's political ambitions has drawn particular scrutiny. Ms Bright questioned the logic of someone facing such serious allegations seeking elected office, describing the situation as emblematic of broader governance challenges in Ghana.

"This is exactly the problem with our country. Why should someone like that be contesting for a political post? It is something that defies all logic and all reasoning," she said, calling on the governing party to make a clear break with the individual.

Her intervention reflects growing public concern over how allegations of abuse at educational institutions are handled and whether those implicated face meaningful consequences or political protection.

Accountability and Student Protection Must Come First

Ms Bright emphasised that any response to the allegations must be measured by three critical standards: whether students are adequately protected, whether investigations are conducted fairly and independently, and whether accountability follows the evidence wherever it leads.

She stressed the importance of establishing what school officials knew about the alleged incidents, when they became aware, and what steps—if any—they took to report or stop the abuse. This focus on institutional knowledge and responsibility extends beyond the headmaster alone.

The lawyer was unequivocal about the consequences if guilt is established, stating: "It's a total abuse of trust, and he must be fully investigated and jailed if he's found to be culpable."

Why It Matters for Ghana

Sexual abuse in Ghanaian schools has been a persistent concern, with students—many from disadvantaged backgrounds—facing particular vulnerability. The case highlights tensions between political expediency and institutional safeguarding.

When individuals facing serious criminal allegations continue to hold positions of authority or pursue higher office without apparent consequence, it can undermine public confidence in the education system and the institutions meant to protect young people. It also raises questions about party discipline and whether political organisations are willing to enforce ethical standards on their members.

Ms Bright's call for the NDC to act reflects a broader principle: that political parties should not shield members from accountability for grave misconduct, particularly when the victims are children under their care. Such cases test whether Ghana's democratic institutions and safeguarding frameworks prioritise child protection over political convenience.

The matter also underscores the need for transparent, independent investigations into school-based abuse and clear protocols for reporting, so that allegations do not become entangled with political considerations.
