Huniso community leaders back Gold Fields lease renewal, reject calls for state takeover

Community leaders and youth representatives from Huniso and surrounding areas in Ghana's Western Region have publicly opposed proposals to prevent the government from renewing Gold Fields Ghana's operating lease for the Tarkwa Mine, citing concerns over job losses and economic disruption.

The Concerned Opinion Leaders of Huniso and Surrounding Communities, led by convener Nana Kwesi Ansah, came out against the so-called "Apinto Shared Prosperity Proposal", which calls for the government to reject the multinational company's 20-year lease extension and instead transfer mining operations to a wholly Ghanaian-owned entity. The group argues that such a move would threaten employment, government revenue streams and local businesses dependent on mining activities.

Why the proposal is problematic, according to community leaders

At a press engagement, Ansah highlighted the technical and financial complexities involved in operating a modern large-scale mine. He stressed that managing such operations demands substantial capital investment, advanced technical knowledge, specialised machinery and rigorous compliance with environmental and safety regulations. Switching operators without solid guarantees of continuity, he warned, could have severe consequences for workers, contractors and allied businesses relying on Tarkwa Mine activity.

The group also disputed claims that Gold Fields has failed to contribute meaningfully to host communities. Ansah pointed to multiple development projects funded through the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, including road construction, sports infrastructure, educational scholarships, water supply systems, health facilities and farming initiatives. He acknowledged that mining does carry environmental and social risks, but contended these should be managed through stronger regulatory oversight rather than operational disruption.

What communities want instead

Rather than rejecting the lease renewal outright, the Huniso leaders are calling on the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission to continue their review of Gold Fields' application while negotiating enhanced commitments to affected communities. These demands include:

  • Increased local employment opportunities and priority recruitment for young people
  • Technical training and skills development programmes for residents
  • Completion of outstanding development projects
  • Road improvements and infrastructure upgrades
  • Clear implementation timelines for commitments such as the Health Training School

The broader context: Ghana's mining lease debate

This statement reflects a broader tension in Ghana's mining sector between demands for greater local ownership and resource control on one hand, and concerns about operational capacity and continuity on the other. The Tarkwa Mine, one of Ghana's largest gold operations, generates significant government revenue and provides employment to thousands. Community-level support for lease renewal suggests that residents prioritise immediate livelihood security over longer-term ownership restructuring.

However, the group's emphasis on stronger regulation and enhanced community benefits also signals that acceptance of foreign-led mining is conditional. Ansah stressed that decisions on the mine's future should be guided by the interests of workers, youth, traders and farmers, and that properly regulated investment remains vital to the local economy. The call for enhanced negotiation rather than outright rejection reflects a pragmatic approach: securing better terms from an established operator rather than risking operational collapse.

The government's final decision on the lease renewal will likely weigh these community sentiments alongside broader national interests in revenue, employment and Ghana's reputation as a stable mining destination.
