Government presents support packages to families of eight officials killed in August helicopter tragedy

The government has formally presented a substantial support package to the families of eight state officials who lost their lives in a Ghana Air Force helicopter crash on 4 August, marking a significant step in ensuring the welfare and future security of the children left behind.

The initiative, presented on Thursday, demonstrates the government's commitment to long-term assistance for the bereaved families. President John Dramani Mahama stressed during the ceremony that whilst no amount of money could replace the lives lost, the intervention was designed to provide meaningful, sustained support particularly in healthcare and education.

What the support package includes

The comprehensive assistance encompasses several key components. Each of the 27 beneficiaries has been enrolled in Nationwide Medical Insurance's premier plan, providing annual healthcare coverage valued at GH¢3 million. This grants access to 942 accredited healthcare providers nationwide through individual identification cards.

Additionally, 13 Stanbic Bank trust accounts have been established for the affected children, each funded with GH¢1 million. Six further fixed deposit accounts were created for the adult children of the deceased officials, also containing GH¢1 million each. These deposits will be held for three months to allow investment appreciation whilst giving families time to plan prudent use of the resources.

Every bereaved family has also received a legacy box containing a personal letter signed by President Mahama, a Children's Fund investment certificate, and a commemorative medallion honouring their deceased parents and guardians.

Education and long-term planning

Recognising education as crucial to the children's futures, the government has established a dedicated Children's Support Fund to ensure educational needs are met. President Mahama described this as one of the greatest investments possible in the children's long-term development and security.

This tragedy represents one of Ghana's most significant losses of senior government personnel in recent times. The helicopter carried Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, NDC National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and members of the flight crew who were travelling on official duty from Accra to the Ashanti Region.

The government's response sets an important precedent for how the state cares for families affected by tragedy. By establishing long-term financial structures and healthcare coverage rather than one-off payments, the approach addresses immediate needs whilst providing stability for education and healthcare over many years.
