Ghana Fans Who Flew Over 5,000 Miles to Support Black Stars Left Stranded Outside Philadelphia Stadium
A number of Ghanaian supporters who made the gruelling journey from Accra to Philadelphia to cheer on the Black Stars were left heartbroken on Saturday after ticket confusion prevented them from entering Lincoln Financial Field for Ghana's FIFA World Cup Group L fixture against Croatia.
According to a report by The Athletic, the affected fans had travelled over 5,000 miles only to find themselves stranded on the pavement outside the stadium as the match got under way inside. Many had gathered at a specific stadium entrance under the impression that tickets had been arranged for them, but confusion quickly emerged over who was responsible for handing them out.
Some supporters believed a representative of a Ghanaian supporters' association was due to arrive with the tickets, while others alleged that the tickets may have been resold on the secondary market. One supporter told The Athletic she suspected the tickets earmarked for the group had been diverted to resale platforms, though that claim was not immediately confirmed.
As kick-off drew closer and frustrations mounted, the police presence at the gate increased sharply — with the number of officers reportedly doubling and then tripling. Although there were a handful of tense moments between fans and officers, the majority of supporters remained composed, watching the match on their mobile phones while hoping the situation would be resolved. Approximately 30 minutes into the match, police cleared the area and directed fans towards the car parks, ending any prospect of them entering the venue.
The unfortunate episode cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory occasion. Ghana had already sealed qualification for the Round of 32 of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup ahead of the Croatia match, having claimed four points from wins over Panama and a draw against England — a remarkable achievement at the tournament's inaugural 48-team edition.
No official explanation has been provided regarding the ticketing breakdown, but the incident is expected to raise serious questions about how ticket allocations for organised supporter groups are managed at major FIFA tournaments. Ghana's passionate fanbase has been one of the most prominent at the competition, with supporters filling stadiums across the United States and Canada adorned in the country's red, gold and green colours.
