GES opens pathway for non-teaching staff promotion across 15 job grades
The Ghana Education Service has launched a promotion exercise for non-teaching personnel, opening applications for advancement across multiple professional and support categories. The initiative, announced on 11 September, targets serving staff in roles ranging from accounting and auditing to catering, technical support and administrative functions, offering a structured pathway for career progression within Ghana's education system.
The exercise encompasses 15 position categories, including Chief Accountant II, Deputy Chief Accountant positions, Chief Internal Auditor II, Principal Internal Auditor, Chief Administrative Officer II, Principal Administrative Officer, Chief Domestic Bursar, Chief Technical Officer, Chief Librarian, Chief Supply Officer, Chief Laboratory Technician, Principal Private Secretary, and Chief Driver roles, among others.
Who can apply and key requirements
Non-teaching staff must meet specific eligibility criteria to participate. Applicants must have been promoted to any of the specified grades on or before 2022 and must have remained continuously in post since that date, subject only to approved periods of absence. The GES also emphasises the importance of a satisfactory work history and good conduct throughout an applicant's service record.
The Service has introduced a fast-track provision for holders of Master's or PhD qualifications. Officers with these advanced credentials may bypass the standard queue to enter interviews directly, provided their postgraduate studies were undertaken through an approved GES course, the qualification was not obtained before their previous promotion, and the degree was awarded in or before 2023.
Application process and timeline
Interested candidates must apply online through https://bit.ly/NONTEACHING2026 or by scanning a QR code included in the official notice. The application window runs from Monday, 14 September to Monday, 28 September 2026.
Applicants are required to submit a recent passport-sized photograph and their most recent promotion or appointment letter confirming current grade status. Those relying on postgraduate qualifications must upload only their Master's or Doctorate certificate. All supporting documents, except the photograph, must be in PDF format and be clear and legible.
Why it matters for Ghana's education sector
This promotion exercise reflects the GES's commitment to professional development within Ghana's education system and recognises the critical role non-teaching staff play in school administration and operations. From finance management and internal audits to technical maintenance, library services and catering, these roles directly support the delivery of education. By creating a structured promotion pathway, the Service aims to retain experienced personnel and improve morale among support staff who often work behind the scenes to keep schools functioning effectively.
For eligible staff members, this represents a concrete opportunity for career advancement and salary progression. The recognition of advanced qualifications through the fast-track mechanism also encourages GES employees to pursue further education, potentially strengthening the professional standards across the education service. The two-week application window is tight, so interested candidates should prepare their documents promptly to meet the 28 September deadline.
