Former Boxer Ayitey Powers Remanded Over Death Threat to NSA Chief

Former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded in custody for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court following allegations that he threatened the life of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA).

The incident centres on a social media video in which Okai allegedly made an explicit threat, stating: "You, Yaw Ampofo, I will shoot you with a gun." The video went viral across online platforms before authorities intervened.

On 18 August 2026, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command flagged the threatening video and subsequently arrested Okai on public safety grounds. He now faces a single charge of threat of death, to which he has entered a not guilty plea. The court has scheduled his next appearance for 2 September 2026.

According to court records presented by the prosecution, Okai, a former Crucial Weight boxer, created and distributed the threatening content via social media without apparent provocation. The video quickly spread across networks before drawing the attention of law enforcement.

The NSA chief, Mr Ankrah, filed a formal complaint with the Police following the threat, triggering the investigation that led to Okai's apprehension.
