Inaki Williams, the Athletic Club forward who switched his international allegiance to Ghana in 2022, has announced his retirement from the Black Stars at age 32. The decision marks the end of a four-year chapter during which he became an important part of Ghana's attacking options, featuring in two FIFA World Cup campaigns and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Williams made 28 appearances for Ghana's senior national team, contributing two goals during his tenure. His international journey with the Black Stars began in September 2022 when then-coach Otto Addo selected him for pre-World Cup friendly matches against Brazil and Nicaragua, just weeks before Ghana's participation in the Qatar World Cup. He would go on to feature in both the 2022 and 2026 World Cup tournaments with the nation, as well as Ghana's unsuccessful group-stage campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire.

In an emotional statement posted on social media, Williams expressed gratitude for his time representing Ghana. "I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end," he wrote. "I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt."

The striker emphasised the deeper significance of his decision to represent Ghana beyond football alone. "Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest," he stated, highlighting how his international switch fulfilled a personal connection to the West African nation.

Williams' path to the Black Stars was unconventional. Before committing to Ghana, he had represented Spain at senior level, earning one cap in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016. However, his decision to switch allegiance to Ghana in July 2022 represented a significant turning point, allowing him to represent a nation to which he felt a deeper cultural and ancestral connection.

Now 32 years old, Williams intends to focus exclusively on his club career at Athletic Club, one of La Liga's most established institutions.
