Ambulance's emergency dash causes four-vehicle pile-up at Tech Junction in Ashanti

A four-vehicle collision at Tech Junction-Top High in Oforikrom Municipality has reignited concerns about emergency vehicle protocols and road safety during peak traffic hours. The incident occurred on Sunday morning around 7:15 a.m. when an ambulance with registration GV 554-24 attempted to navigate through gridlocked traffic on the Ejisu stretch of the Ashanti Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the ambulance was responding to an emergency call and had its siren activated as it approached the congested intersection. The driver attempted to weave between stationary vehicles waiting at a red traffic light, but found insufficient space to pass safely. In the attempt, the ambulance struck the first vehicle, which was then pushed into two additional cars ahead, resulting in a chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles total.

What happened at the scene

Motorists present at the time described the sequence of events with frustration. One affected driver explained that while they heard the ambulance siren, the intersection was already completely packed due to the red light signal. He noted that alternative lanes were not available for the ambulance to use safely. The ambulance driver, speaking off camera, justified the manoeuvre by citing the urgency of transporting a patient to hospital and the need to move quickly through congested traffic.

Emergency responders from the Adum Division of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service arrived shortly after to manage the scene, control traffic flow, and document the incident. A backup ambulance was summoned to transport the patient, allowing medical personnel to proceed to their destination. Fortunately, no deaths or serious injuries were reported among those involved in the collision. Vehicle damage was confined to bumpers and fenders across all four cars affected.

Tow trucks cleared the damaged vehicles, though the incident caused temporary traffic disruptions along the Top High stretch during the morning rush period.
