Tricycle Rider Who Defiled 3-Year-Old Girl Jailed 14 Years by Wa High Court

A Wa High Court has handed a 29-year-old man a 14-year custodial sentence with hard labour after he was convicted of defiling a toddler he had been entrusted to ferry to and from school. Naah Mashood, a tricycle rider operating in the Tiegber area of the Wa Municipality in the Upper West Region, was found guilty of the offence by His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu on 30th October 2026 — bringing to a close a case that shocked the local community.

How the Crime Unfolded

The victim's parents had contracted Mashood to transport their three-year-old daughter to and from school — a common and convenient arrangement for many families in Ghanaian communities where tricycles, locally known as 'Camboo', serve as an affordable mode of transport. On 23rd February 2026, however, Mashood betrayed that trust in the most grievous manner possible. Instead of delivering the child safely, he lured her to an isolated location and sexually assaulted her inside his tricycle.

The victim's mother subsequently filed a complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Upper West Regional Police Command. Officers moved swiftly, arresting Mashood the very next day, on 24th February 2026. Following thorough investigations, he was first arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court before the case was escalated to the Wa High Court, where he stood full trial. Justice Osei-Wusu found him guilty on all counts and imposed the maximum-weight sentence available — 14 years imprisonment with hard labour.

Why This Case Matters for Ghana

Child defilement remains one of the most reported and deeply troubling offences across Ghana, with DOVVSU units nationwide routinely handling hundreds of such cases every year. What makes this particular incident especially alarming is the context of misplaced trust: the perpetrator was not a stranger but someone the family had deliberately hired and placed confidence in to protect their child during the school run.

The case highlights the vulnerability of young children when parents, out of necessity, must rely on third parties for school transportation — a reality for countless Ghanaian families, particularly in regions where public transport infrastructure is limited and walking distances to school can be considerable. It raises important questions about the vetting of individuals entrusted with children's safety, and whether communities and institutions have adequate safeguarding mechanisms in place.

From a legal standpoint, the 14-year sentence sends a clear signal that Ghanaian courts treat defilement with utmost seriousness. Under Ghana's Criminal Offences Act, defilement — defined as sexual intercourse with a child under 16 years of age — carries a minimum sentence of a substantial custodial term, and courts have consistently been encouraged to impose deterrent sentences, particularly where the victim is very young.

Police Call on Public to Stay Vigilant

The Upper West Regional Police Command commended the officers who handled the investigation and prosecution, noting that the successful conviction was the result of diligent police work and community cooperation. The Command issued a pointed advisory to parents and guardians across the region:

  • Keep a close eye on children at all times and monitor who has access to them.
  • Thoroughly vet any individual — including hired drivers and tricycle riders — before entrusting them with children.
  • Report any suspected case of child abuse or defilement immediately to the nearest police station or DOVVSU office.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and prosecuting perpetrators of sexual offences to the fullest extent of the law. For families with concerns or information about child abuse, DOVVSU offices are present in all regional capitals and many district towns across Ghana, and reports can be made in confidence.
