Suame MP Brands Torkornoo Removal Case 'Politically Motivated' Despite Legal Framing

Suame Member of Parliament John Darko has characterised the proceedings against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as fundamentally political, despite their legal packaging. Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, Mr Darko contended that whilst the case began as a legal matter, it quickly became shaped by political calculations and strategic manoeuvring behind the scenes.

The MP acknowledged that the constitutional and human rights questions at stake—including rights to fair process and access to justice—are genuine legal concerns. However, he insisted the broader context reveals a politically driven process rather than a purely judicial one.

"For me, this case, as I said earlier, began as a legal case. But for me, it was always political," Mr Darko stated. He further argued that the trajectory of events reflected a predetermined political outcome, with actors involved remaining consistent in pursuing their pre-set objective.

Mr Darko suggested that despite legal arguments centring on procedural and human rights issues—including rights to information and employment—the underlying dynamics point to political rather than judicial motivations driving the case forward.

His comments follow the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice's dismissal of all seven claims filed by former Chief Justice Torkornoo against the Republic of Ghana, effectively ending her legal challenge to her removal from office.
