Nine injured as emergency services respond to multiple accidents across Ashanti Region

Emergency services in the Ashanti Region swung into action this week following a series of critical incidents that left nine people injured and threatened public safety across multiple locations. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) coordinated rescue operations at two major road accidents whilst simultaneously managing a hazardous materials emergency, underscoring the region's ongoing road safety challenges.

The most serious incident occurred at Akrofoase Mampong, where a Ghana Police Service bus veered off the road and plunged into a ditch. Seven police officers sustained varying degrees of injury in the crash and were transported to hospital for treatment. Emergency responders, including firefighters from the Ashanti Regional Command, worked quickly to extract the trapped officers and provide initial medical support before evacuation.

Separately, at Senfi near the Police Barrier, a collision between a Kia Rhino truck and a Howo petrol tanker left two additional people injured. The involvement of a fuel tanker created serious safety concerns, as any ignition could have triggered a fire or explosion. However, the rapid arrival of firefighters allowed crews to secure the scene, contain potential hazards, and transport the injured to medical facilities.

A third emergency kept responders on high alert

As if the two road accidents were not enough, GNFS personnel also successfully managed a hazardous materials incident at Konongo involving a cargo truck leaking hydrogen peroxide. The chemical reaction produced heavy smoke and posed a serious environmental and health risk. Firefighters employed specialised hazmat response techniques, cooling the affected container and diluting the leaking substance to prevent escalation. Although part of the cargo was damaged, no injuries were reported from this incident.

These incidents highlight persistent road safety concerns in the Ashanti Region and across Ghana more broadly. The involvement of government vehicles and emergency response personnel draws attention to the need for improved driver training, vehicle maintenance standards, and road conditions. Road accidents remain a leading cause of injury and death in Ghana, draining healthcare resources and affecting families and communities.

The quick response by the GNFS in all three situations—rescuing trapped victims, preventing a potential fuel tanker disaster, and containing a chemical hazard—demonstrates the critical importance of well-resourced emergency services. However, these repeated incidents suggest that prevention through better road infrastructure, traffic enforcement, and public awareness campaigns must become a higher priority.

Authorities have initiated investigations into both road accidents to determine their causes. The findings could inform policy changes aimed at reducing similar incidents in future.
