Netflix's 'The Polygamist' becomes African sensation, sparks continent-wide debate on marriage and infidelity

A South African Netflix series centred on polygamy and marital betrayal has become a viral sensation across Africa, attracting millions of viewers and dominating social media conversations from Ghana to Kenya to Nigeria. The Polygamist, a 22-episode Zulu-language drama released on 12 June, tells the story of wealthy Johannesburg businessman Jonasi Gomora, whose funeral reveals he maintained multiple wives and mistresses simultaneously.

The show topped trend lists within hours of its release and has sparked intense debate across the continent about marriage, infidelity, and cultural attitudes towards polygamy. Within the first week, it became the most-watched series on Netflix in South Africa and Kenya, cracked the top 10 in Nigeria and Mauritius, and achieved two million views globally. Even Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido and Hollywood actresses Taraji P Henson and Sherri Shepherd have publicly praised the drama on social media.

The series, based on a 2012 Zimbabwean novel, was developed by South African production company Stained Glass TV. Executive producers include Gugu Zuma-Ncube and Thuli Zuma, daughters of former South African president Jacob Zuma—himself a prominent polygamist with four current wives. Zuma-Ncube revealed that personal family experiences directly influenced the storytelling, with many scenes drawn from her own upbringing in a polygamist household.

Viewers across Africa have connected deeply with the narrative's exploration of broken families and social dysfunction. The show's protagonist Jonasi has become a focal point for continental conversation, with audiences describing him as a "serial cheater" and symbol of broader societal issues. Producer Zuma-Ncube said the team was "floored" by how the drama resonated emotionally with women navigating relationships and children from complex family structures.

The international reach has been remarkable, with The Polygamist ranking in the top 10 non-English series globally and gaining traction in Trinidad and Tobago, Romania, and the Dominican Republic. For Zuma-Ncube, the African embrace of the show holds particular significance given recent anti-migrant tensions across the continent.
