Asante Kotoko part ways with Eric Tinkler after just three months in charge

Asante Kotoko have announced the immediate departure of head coach Eric Tinkler, barely three months after his appointment in July. The South African tactician's exit comes just a day after the Porcupines suffered their maiden defeat of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, going down 2-0 to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on September 27.

In an official statement dated September 28, Kotoko's Board of Directors confirmed they had "agreed to the request of its Head Coach, Mr. Eric Tinkler, to be released from his contract with the Club effective immediately for personal reasons." The club indicated that negotiations were undertaken to retain the coach, but ultimately respected his decision to leave.

Short but eventful tenure

Despite his brief spell with the Kumasi-based club, Tinkler managed to deliver silverware. He guided Kotoko to victory in the Democracy Cup earlier in the season, defeating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak. In the Ghana Premier League, he oversaw four matches, recording one win, two draws and one loss. His record included a 2-2 draw with Debibi United, a 2-1 victory over Hearts of Lions, a 1-1 stalemate with Samartex, and the aforementioned 2-0 defeat to Aduana.

The loss to Aduana marked a significant setback for Kotoko, who had begun their campaign impressively before the defeat punctured their unbeaten run. The timing of Tinkler's exit—immediately following this loss—has raised questions about whether the result accelerated his departure, despite the club's official statement citing personal reasons.

What this means for Kotoko's season

Kotoko's leadership has moved quickly to assure supporters that the club remains committed to its objectives for the campaign. The statement emphasised that the "Technical Team is poised to proceed with the Club's strategies to achieve its objectives under the leadership of the Director of Football, Mr. Stanley Purl Menzo." This suggests that Menzo, a legendary figure in Ghanaian football, will assume greater responsibility in directing the club's footballing affairs whilst a new head coach is sourced.

The Porcupines have little time to dwell on the coaching change, with a fixture against Karela United scheduled for Thursday, October 1. The club will need to stabilise quickly and ensure continuity in their approach, particularly given the significance of maintaining momentum in a competitive Ghana Premier League season. The departure of a coach mid-season, whilst not uncommon in Ghanaian football, presents both a challenge and an opportunity for Kotoko to recalibrate and refocus their campaign strategy.
