Anglican SHS Dominates NSMQ 2026 Qualifier; Namong SHTS Impresses on Debut
Anglican Senior High School in Kumasi has booked its ticket to the One-Eighth Stage of the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) after a convincing performance at the CNC Auditorium, finishing with 69 points to secure top spot in their qualifying round.
The Kumasi-based school established early dominance, posting 25 points in the opening round—ahead of Shama SHS with 19 points and debutants Namong SHTS with 9 points. This lead would only grow as the competition progressed through four subsequent rounds.
A Commanding Display
Anglican SHS demonstrated consistent excellence throughout the contest, particularly in the Speed Race where they rang the bell first on the opening two questions and answered both correctly. By the end of Round Two, their advantage had stretched to 37 points, whilst Shama SHS had 14 points and Namong SHTS remained on 6 points.
The school's domination continued through the Problem of the Day and subsequent rounds. After Round Three, Anglican SHS had 44 points; by Round Four, they had reached 57 points. Their final tally of 69 points left no doubt about their qualification.
Beyond the main score, Anglican SHS also claimed the GOIL Riddle Bonanza Award after answering all riddles correctly, underlining their breadth of knowledge across the competition format.
Namong SHTS Makes Impressive Debut
Whilst Anglican SHS won the round, it was Namong SHTS's first appearance that captured attention for the right reasons. Despite finishing third with 28 points, the debutant school demonstrated remarkable poise, particularly in the True or False round where they answered all questions correctly to earn the Clean Sheet Award.
Shama SHS, the third school in the contest, accumulated 25 points by the final round but could not match the performances of their opponents.
Why It Matters for Ghana
The NSMQ remains one of Ghana's premier academic competitions and a cultural fixture that garners nationwide attention. The quiz showcases the intellectual capabilities of Ghana's secondary school students and has historically produced many of the nation's top performers in STEM fields. Anglican SHS's advancement represents another successful chapter for a school that has previously made its mark in the competition.
The strong performance of a debutant like Namong SHTS also signals that quality science and mathematics education continues to develop across Ghana's regions, extending beyond traditionally prominent schools. Such emerging talent is crucial for the country's long-term competitiveness in academic excellence.
The 2026 NSMQ, produced by Primetime Limited and sponsored by the Ghana Education Service with support from Goil PLC and numerous corporate partners, continues to be broadcast on JoyNews, ensuring the competition reaches schools and families across the country. As the competition progresses through its stages, it will provide a platform for Ghana's brightest young minds to demonstrate their capabilities on a national stage.
