26 US Universities to Host Ghana College Fair in Kumasi and Accra This September

Ghana's brightest students will have the rare opportunity to meet representatives from 26 accredited American universities at the EducationUSA College Fair, taking place simultaneously in Kumasi and Accra this month. The initiative removes barriers between Ghanaian applicants and top-tier US institutions, offering real-time guidance on admissions processes, financial aid options and student visa requirements that prospective students often struggle to navigate independently.

The fair arrives at a strategic moment for Ghanaian students seeking international education. According to the US Education and Cultural Attaché Donya Eldridge, Ghana currently ranks 14th globally and second in sub-Saharan Africa—after Nigeria—in sending students to American universities. The EducationUSA initiative aims to strengthen this pipeline by demystifying the application process and connecting students directly with admission officers.

What to expect at the fair

Participating institutions represent a diverse range of academic profiles and specialisations, from Ivy League universities like Harvard and Tufts to specialist business schools and regional comprehensive universities. The roster includes Rice University, Northeastern University, University of Texas at Dallas, and Virginia Commonwealth University, among others.

Contrary to widespread misconception, students need not arrive with perfect test scores or completed applications. Ms Eldridge emphasised that the fair welcomes curious, unprepared students eager to learn. Attendees can ask about specific programme offerings, typical admission requirements, tuition costs, scholarship opportunities including athletic scholarships, and the nuances of individual institutions' selection criteria.

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) will also be present to address questions about standardised tests—particularly the SAT and GRE—and test preparation strategies. Crucially, consular officers will conduct sessions on the US student visa process, a critical stage that often confuses applicants.

EducationUSA Advisor Bernice Afotey cautioned that university representatives will not offer immediate admissions decisions at the fair. US universities employ holistic review processes that require formal applications, academic transcripts, test scores and often essays or personal statements. However, the fair provides invaluable insider knowledge about what each institution seeks and how to strengthen an application.

Why this matters for Ghana

Education abroad remains a transformative pathway for many Ghanaian families, yet access to reliable information is uneven. Urban students in Accra may have better exposure through school counsellors or private consultants; rural and regional students often lack guidance. This fair levels that playing field by bringing world-class institutions directly to Kumasi—underserving Ghana's education landscape outside the capital.

With tuition and living costs varying dramatically between US universities, the direct dialogue also allows families to make informed financial decisions. Some institutions offer generous need-based financial aid; others do not. Athletic scholarships may suit talented Ghanaian sports professionals. Accra: Friday, 25 September at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. Undergraduate session 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m.; graduate session 3 p.m.–6 p.m.

Pre-registration speeds up check-in and allows participants to maximise time with university representatives.
