In a dramatic turn of events that is likely to shake the political landscape of the Western North Region, veteran politician Appiah-Kubi Baidoo has officially resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In a letter dated April 16, 2025, addressed to the Constituency Chairman of the NPP in the Sefwi Akontombra Constituency, Mr. Baidoo cited “years of maltreatment” by the party as the reason for his departure.

The letter, which has since gone viral on social media and made its way to major media houses, reveals deep-seated frustrations. Mr. Baidoo stated that he and his immediate family had suffered prolonged mistreatment from the party, and despite numerous appeals—including written communications—to the National Executives, no solution had been provided.

Appiah-Kubi Baidoo, a longstanding figure within the party, expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had during his tenure. He notably served as District Chief Executive and also contested as the Parliamentary Candidate for Sefwi Akontombra on three separate occasions.

In the resignation letter, he wrote, “I unreservedly apologise to the thousands of supporters and sympathisers who have been with me through thick and thin over the last two decades and who will in one way or the other be affected by my resignation.”

This move is expected to have ripple effects, especially among grassroots supporters in the Western North Region. Political analysts say Baidoo’s exit could indicate deeper issues within the constituency’s party structure that may need urgent attention from the national leadership of the NPP.

The letter was copied to the Regional Chairman of the NPP, the General Secretary at the party’s head office in Accra, and members of the media, signaling Baidoo’s intent to make his resignation public and transparent.

As the 2024 general elections approach, the NPP will have to work hard to regain confidence in the Sefwi Akontombra Constituency. Whether Baidoo plans to join another party or retire from politics altogether remains to be seen.
