Kwame Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, has appealed to the leadership of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to work together to help bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Bawku.
He called for unity among parliamentary leaders from both sides to address the deadly situation. According to him, political involvement in the conflict is evident, and he urged those responsible to step back and allow for a peaceful resolution.
“If politicians are going to get involved, it should be in a united effort from both parties to solve the problem. They must show the people of Bawku that the violence benefits no one,” Appiah-Kubi said on TV3’s Key Points program on Saturday, April 12.
Echoing similar sentiments, Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor also called on the youth and residents of Bawku to put an end to the conflict. He reminded them that development cannot take place in a climate of violence and instability.
“My plea to the youth of Bawku is this: even in law, there comes a point where litigation ends. Likewise, every conflict must also come to an end. Peaceful coexistence is essential for progress. Infrastructure like roads, electricity, and even the presence of teachers and traders all suffer when insecurity prevails,” he said.
On Friday, April 11, President John Dramani Mahama condemned the recent surge in violence and confirmed that peace talks, led by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, would resume the following week.
Speaking at the Ghana Military Academy’s graduation parade, the President reiterated his government’s dedication to restoring calm in the Bawku area.
He acknowledged the Ghana Armed Forces’ ongoing efforts to maintain peace across the country, describing Bawku as one of the major hotspots. He referenced a violent incident that occurred at the market just two days prior, which resulted in loss of life and property damage.
“Nobody benefits from this kind of unrest,” he emphasized.
President Mahama also stressed that the mediation process led by the Asantehene, which brings all key parties together to find a lasting solution, remains the most viable path to peace.
“The Otumfuo’s mediation process is ongoing. All stakeholders are involved in talks in Kumasi to chart a peaceful way forward. The Asantehene has assured me that discussions will resume next week after his return from abroad,” he stated.
The renewed violence on Thursday, April 10, reportedly led to multiple casualties during clashes between police and local youth. The private residence of MP Mahama Ayariga was also allegedly set on fire during the turmoil.
