President John Dramani Mahama has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the national football team, the Black Stars, after their emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

The Black Stars thrilled the massive crowd at the Accra Sports Stadium with an impressive display of skill and dominance that rekindled the enthusiasm of many Ghanaian football fans.

President Mahama could not contain his excitement after the match. Less than an hour after the final whistle, he took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his delight, posting:

“I had a good appetite for dinner after the Black Stars’ 5-0 victory. Congrats guys!”

However, he was quick to caution the team against complacency, urging them to maintain their focus as they move forward.

“Let this victory not make us complacent. This should be the beginning of bringing back the LOVE. Next focus: Madagascar. Go Black Stars!” President Mahama wrote on March 21.

Dominant Performance Sends Ghana to the Top of Group I

The resounding victory propelled Ghana to the top of Group I, setting the stage for a crucial encounter against Madagascar on Monday.

From the outset, the Black Stars overwhelmed their Chadian opponents with a high-pressing game. Their efforts paid off early when Antoine Semenyo pounced on a loose ball in the box to open the scoring after a goalmouth scramble.

Though Jordan Ayew missed a clear chance moments later, Ghana maintained relentless pressure. Inaki Williams doubled the lead with a powerful header from Kingsley Schindler’s precise cross, fulfilling his pre-match promise to score.

Five minutes before halftime, Ayew redeemed himself by calmly converting a penalty after Semenyo was fouled in the box, giving Ghana a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

Second Half Seals Chad’s Fate

The second half mirrored the first in intensity and purpose. Mohammed Salisu extended Ghana’s lead with a towering header from an Ernest Nuamah corner, while Nuamah himself completed the rout with a composed finish after a clever backheel assist from Ayew.

Coach Otto Addo took the opportunity to rotate his squad late in the game, introducing debutant Lawrence Agyekum along with Kamaldeen Sulemana, Francis Abu, Jerome Opoku, and Jerry Afriyie. Despite Mohammed Kudus and Afriyie missing late chances, the outcome was never in doubt.

Historic Win Boosts Ghana’s World Cup Hopes

This commanding win marked Ghana’s first five-goal haul since a 2020 friendly against Qatar and handed Chad their heaviest competitive defeat since 2015.

With momentum on their side, the Black Stars now shift their focus to Monday’s clash against Madagascar in Morocco, where a victory would bring them closer to securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
